Under ICD-10-CM, metrorrhagia is an inclusion term under N92.1, "Excessive and frequent menstruation with irregular cycle" [ICD-10-CM] [AAPC]. The FY2027 code set applies to services from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027 [CDC]. In FY2027 the N92 category sits in the N80–N98 block, "Noninflammatory disorders of female genital tract."

Verify before you code

Always confirm codes in the current official ICD-10-CM Tabular List and Index from CDC/CMS and follow the Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting [CMS]. This page is a study aid, not coding advice for a specific claim.

Decision tips for students

  1. Is the patient pregnant? Use the obstetric chapter.
  2. Postmenopausal? N95.0, not N92 (Excludes1).
  3. Perimenopausal metrorrhagia? The Index points perimenopausal metrorrhagia to N92.4, not N92.1.
  4. Regular, predictable mid-cycle spotting? N92.3 (regular intermenstrual bleeding) rather than N92.1 (irregular).
  5. After intercourse? N93.0.
  6. Cause confirmed? When the provider documents a definitive diagnosis (for example a leiomyoma or polyp), code that condition. Signs and symptoms routinely associated with a confirmed diagnosis generally aren't coded in addition. Check the Official Guidelines' rules on symptom codes.
